Instagram’s New Teen Safety Feature to Launch in the UK, US, Australia, and Canada
Meta is launching a new safety feature on its social media platform Instagram that will notify parents if their teenager continues to search for terms related to suicide or self-harm. Starting next week in the UK, US, Australia, and Canada, Meta will notify parents who use "Teen Accounts" if their teenager continues to search for terms related to suicide or self-harm. Though Meta has claimed that the new feature is aimed at empowering parents, the move has been termed "clumsy" and "risky" by suicide prevention charities like the Molly Rose Foundation. The charities claim that the new feature could end up doing more harm than good and that the social media company should instead focus on removing content that promotes suicide rather than putting the onus on parents to keep track of their children.
